Deceitful December

No, onneks joulu on vaan kerran vuodessa.

Today is the first day of December, which means that yesterday I got to hang my advent calendar on the wall and today I got to open the first window! And my calendar looks so gorgeous.

I'm not exactly a Christmas person, but and advent calendar is a must. Especially if I happen to find a cool one. But shopping food and other things is starting to be quite horrible, since there's those infernal Christmas carols playing in every store. I hate them so much, and I just try to make my shopping as fast as possible and run away. All Christmas fuss is quite annoying.

Well, fortunately Christmas is only once a year. I have already a few Christmas presents ready, but I haven't really had time to get them all. Now, as I don't have much school stuff anymore to do this autumn, I can focus on e.g. making a present for my partner's parents.

But that's enough with Christmas. I guess I was feeling Christmassy on a lesson of which notes I was reading this morning before an exam I had later today. The exam was quite hard, but what else can you expect from a course focusing on all 8 Finnic languages (except Finnish) and their features and histories and so on.

The sun had already set as I left for the exam, and my outfit photos didn't turn out very well in the indoor light. The face pics weren't that good either, but there's one anyway. It's maybe the most tolerable one. I really look like I'm brain-dead or something, but I guess that's what studying does to a human-being.

Q & A

So, finally I've managed to answer to all the great questions I got from you readers. Thanks for them again! The questions were in Finnish, with the exception of one riddle, so I've translated everything in English too, so you all would (hopefully) understand. :) Of  course you can also ask some extra questions if you think I didn't answer extensively enough. But here's some reading for you quys.

Voiko puhuttu kieli olla kieliopillisesti väärää? / Can spoken language be grammatically incorrect?
Well basically not, because same rules don't apply to the written and spoken language. Sure you can use the language in an annoying way, but the spoken language has a grammar of its own.

If you had to give up either chocolate or coffee, which one would you give up?
Painajaismaista! Kaikki suklaaleivokset on just aina parhaita. Tähän on tosi hankala vastata, koska nautin suuresti kummastakin. Suklaata ei hirveesti tuu syötyä paljaaltaan, mut ah, kaikki suklaajälkiruoat. Pakko luopuu kahvista. / This proved to be surprisingly hard question. First I was going to say just "chocolate", because I drink coffee every day and I don't need chocolate every day, but then I started thinking about how many things chocolate can be used in and in how many forms I like to enjoy it. What would be, for example, baking without chocolate? A nightmare! The chocolate pastries are always the best ones. Also I seem to be immune to the effect of caffeine, because coffee and other caffeine products have no effect on me, so I guess I could give up the coffee drinking habit if I had to. But then again, moderate use of coffee is healthier than moderate use of chocolate... It is so hard to answer this, because I enjoy very much both of them. I don't eat chocolate by itself so much, but ah, all the chocolate desserts. I have to give up coffee.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if woodchuck could chuck wood?
A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Tarvitseeko uhanalaisia kieliä yrittää suojella niiden itsensä vuoksi? Onko kielillä siis itseisarvoa? / Should the endangered languages be preserved just for their own existence? Do languages have intrinsic value?

Jaa-a. / Well, I' don't know is there any sense to try to perserve a language that has no longer speakers and that is no longer used anywhere. Of course the death of a language is unfortunate, but I guess they shouldn't be kept alive by force. That's all I can say.

Mikä on paras iskurepliikki, jonka olet kuullut? / What is the best pick-up line you've heard? Did it work? If not, do you think the pick-up lines can sometimes work?
En oo valitettavasti ollu kuulemassa mitään hyviä tai ees kliseisiä iskurepliikkejä, vaan aina on keskustelu avattu vaan jotenkin tylsästi. Ehkä itekin luottasin johonkin neutraalimpaan keskustelunaloittajaan valmiiden iskurepliikkien sijasta, mut en tiiä, kai joku saattaa niistäkin pitää. / Unfortunately I haven't heard any that god or even cliched pick-up lines. When people have tried to approach me, they have always started the conversation in a pretty boring way. But I guess I would try some more neutral conversation-starter instead of prepared pick-up lines, but I don't know, maybe some people like them too.
Rahat vai kolmipyörä? / Money or tricycle?
Money, because then I could buy perhaps multiple tricycle r whatever I wished. And I can ride a bicycle, so  wouldn't really even need the tricycle.

Mikä on lempihahmosi Monster Highsta ja miksi? :) Haluisitko lisää nukkeja? Minkä nuken haluisit eniten? / What is your favourite character in Monster High and why? :) Would you like to get more dolls? Which one would you like the most?
Lemppari on varmaankin Frankie Stein, jonka basic-versio olikin eka MH-nukkeni. :) / My favourite must be Frankie Stein, and basic Frankie was my first MH doll. And yeah, I'd love to expand my little collection over the time. I've been coveting Skelita since its first appearance, and I'll have to adopt at least it some day. :)

Kerrotko vähän opiskelustasi, minkälaisista opinnoista se koostuu yms? Mitä haluaisit tehdä "isona"? / Can you tell a bit about your studies, what kind of things is it consisted of etc? What would you like to do when you "grow up"?
Yep, so I study in university, and my major subject is Finnish language and my most important minor subject is English language and translation. I guess I could make a separate post about what kind of courses and stuff those subjects consist of, because I don't think there's no point to write very much here, and it'd be pretty hard to describe them using just a few words (because laymen wouldn't necessarily understand a very brief description). In the future I'd like to work as a translator and/or a reader or something like that.

Rakkain harrastus? / Your dearest hobby?
Tykkään tehä käsilläni kaikenlaista. Tylsillä luennoilla piirtelen muistiinpanojen viereen suunnitelmia vaatteista, jotka illalla huristelen valmiiksi ompelukoneellani. Virkkaaminen ja neulominen houkuttelee taas kovasti etenkin tälleen syksyllä. Lisäksi (etenkin muffinien) leipominen on tässä viimeisen vajaan parin vuoden aikana valloittanu miun sydämen. Eniten nautin kuitenkin korttiaskartelusta. / I like to do things with my hands. I spend boring lectures by drawing clothes designs next to my notes, and then I sew them with my sewing machine into clothes. Crocheting and knitting tempt again in this autumn time. Also during last one or two years I've lost my heart to baking (especially muffins). But most of all I enjoy making cards. I make all the cards myself almost without exception, and they are always made one-to-one for the receiver. I know some people made dozens of identical, for example, Christmas cards and give them to people, but I can't make that kind of "impersonal" cards. I have to always have the receiver in mind, and the card is made just for them.

Lempimusiikki? / Favourite music?

Lempparibändiksi voisin nimetä The Curen, mut sekin kyllä vähä vaihtelee. Näin halloweenin aikoihin esim. Creature Feature soi melkein non-stopilla. / I'm pretty polyvorous (however not omnivorous) when it comes to music, and I don't let genres to limit my listening preferences, but if you like to hear some of my favourite genres, surely gothic rock, post-punk, darkwave and industrial are there on top of the list. J-rock, especially visual kei, is also very close to my heart. Deathrock and punk are also cool, and even metal pleases in some cases. But I do listen to a lot other things also, and the band affects more than the genre. I could say The Cure is my favourite band, but that alternates too. In these halloweenish times I listen to, for example Creature Feature almost on non-stop.

Kahvi vai tee? / Coffee or tea?
Kahvi, ehdottomasti. / Definitely coffee. I've learned to drink also tea and some teas are good too, but it just isn't ever going to compare with coffee.

Kantasi maahanmuuuttajiin? / Your position on immigrants?
Umm, I don't actually have an opinion about immigrants. I think different cultures are a richness, so it'd be great if they got the chance to mix better. I'm sure their culture has much to give for our own and the other way around. But I hardly have own experiences of immigrants, so it's kinda hard to take a stand.

Miks pingviinit? Mikä niissä viehättää? / Why penguins? What is so fascinating about them?
^_^ / Hah, I remember that my first reaction was pretty much like that when I found out my partner loves penguins. So the person in question is the reason why I also started, little by little, to like them, and nowadays we share the fascination for penguins. They are pretty jovial creatures after all. I like especially the brown and fluffy king penguin chicks. ^_^

Hello Kitty pants for the first Japanese lesson

Tulin just enkun tulkkaustunnilta. Huh huh, kielitäyteinen päivä.

Yesterday I had my first Japanese lesson, and due to it I wore for the first time my Hello Kitty pants (or leggings or whatever word you prefer) I bought earlier this summer.

I'm known for my pretty hostile attitude to leggings, but even I succumbed to buy a couple of them this summer. I'd rather had taken them as tights, but what can you do when the coolest prints end up in leggings and not in tights. Argh. But in general I think that leggings should be prohibited by law and especially the people wearing them as trousers should be stoned to death. I at least had a dress with my leggings.

On that Japanese introduction course I'm one of those few people who hasn't studied Japanese before. Most of the participants have studied it independently as I feared. But I'm a little disappointed at how ordinary-looking people there are on the course, though sure there are those couple of boys looking like real anime nerds. But still, I had expected more people looking like they're interested in Japanese stuff. But maybe those people don't go (get) to university.

I guess the fact I was wearing Hello Kitty pants affected my shopping trip, because I happened to choose a pink thermometer. There were also white and baby-blue ones. I've been planning on buying a new thermometer for a long time already, and now I happened to spot that one on sale. It sure is quite... pink.

Now I'm preparing for my first German lesson by listening to Blutengel. Yet I have Japanese before German. I just came home from an English interpreting course. Fairly language-oriented day.

Finds from a clothing swap & back to school

Ilmaset vaatteet on aina jes.

Varmaan muut siellä kurssilla on jotain kunnon animehörhöjä. :D

Huomenna palailen "koulun" penkkiin sit taas. Tällä viikolla alkaakin vaan yks kurssi, Tulkkauksen perusteet, jonka eka luento on siis huomenaamulla.

:D Paitsi kuunnella Nine Inch Nailsin uutta levyä.

There was an event called Joen yö here last Friday, and I went to see some of its acts. A local animal rights organization was throwing a clothing and items swap, so I carried there a bag of my old clothes, and I found something for myself too.

I need to work on that dotted shirt, because it has shoulder pads and it's too big for me. I took a liking to the fabric, which is why I took the shirt with me. That lilac/purple/whatever-the-colour-is shirt might also look better after some personalizing; black details could look great. The grey shirt is fine like that, and I really like the dress that is under the pile.

I didn't find anything else to take/buy in Joen yö, though there were all kinds of stalls around the city. Free clothing is always a cool thing.

Today I was brisk and woke up at ten to six in the morning to enrol on a basic course of Japanese. And on Friday I'll get to know if I can get on a course of German. Yup, I'm planning on starting to study two new languages this autumn. I've been craving German since primary school where I could have had a chance to start studying it, but there weren't enough pupils interested in taking it.  In secondary school I started French, because it appealed more to the romantic goth in that time, and I didn't want to take two new languages. In high school I had enough work with the other languages and maths and physics and stuff, though I would've liked to start German then. I just didn't have time.

But maybe this time I'm lucky! And Japanese was in fact just a whim. Sure I've been listening to Japanese music since secondary school etc. etc., but learning the language itself hasn't really interested me. Naturally I've tried to figure out the meanings of some of my favourite songs, but that's pretty much it. I guess the others on that course are real anime geeks. :D

Tomorrow I'm getting back to "school". Only one course is starting this week, it's a course about interpretation, and its first lecture is on tomorrow morning. The thought of interpreting stuff terrifies me a bit, but maybe I'll survive. I've prepared for the new academic year with some new things.

I thought I could finally buy that kind of cardboard folder where I can carry papers, it's my fourth year in the university after all. But I guess I wouldn't really have bought a folder if I hadn't spotted that Darthy one. Ah. ♥

How do you feel about returning to the everyday life again after the holidays? (If you even had holidays.) On the one hand I find it nice but on the other hand not. It's nice because I can't get anything important done during holidays, so I believe all the important, undone things start to go well again with returning to the everyday routine. But on the other hand I'd like to keep doing nothing. :D Except listening to the new album by Nine Inch Nails.
